Mobile World Congress: the combination of the world’s largest exhibition for the cell phone industry and a congress that brings together leading board presidents of mobile operators, vendors and content owners. It was first called the GSM World Congress and later renamed 3GSM World Congress and has since been renamed the Mobile World Congress. The congress has been held since 1987. First in London for several years (1987 – 1994) after which it took place once in Madrid. From 1996 – 2006 the congress was held in Cannes, France. Since 2007 the congress is held annually in Fira de Barcelona, a trade fair complex in the suburb L’ Hispitalet de Llobregat of Barcelona. Meanwhile, the event has grown to more than 2,300 booths and more than 109,000 visitors.
During the Mobile World Congress big plans are presented. In 2014, Mark Zuckerberg took the stage to explain about his mobile acquisition of WhatsApp and how he was going to connect billions of people. In the meantime, this service has become an integral part of society. Another example: in 2017, the first all-electric race car was launched at Mobile World Congress. The Formula E car has almost double the energy storage capacity and double the range of the current model.
Every year, various themes are discussed and highlighted, such as Connectivity, A Connected Industry, Artificial Intelligence, Startup Innovation and The Future Society. They are all aimed at improving current products and expanding the overall offering. Innovation, development and creation are at the forefront of the event because the cell phone industry is an industry where developments are rapid.
